Shuntaro Tanikawa, Japan’s best-known living poet, published his first book of poems in 1952. Of the fifty-odd books that followed, Kanto Gakuin University colleagues William I. Elliott and Kazuo Kawamura have translated all. To date, 15 have been published. Tanikawa’s poems have been translated into 20 languages. Elliott’s own eighth book of poems will appear in March from Level 4 Press. Kawamura, a Shelley scholar and linguist, continues his study of Russian.
